American Wrestlers

The hissing and popping might keep this debut from one-man-band Gary McClure off mainstream airwaves, and that’s a crying shame. This isn’t lo-fi for lo-fi’s sake, with looping drums and very bright reverb, yet he proves that all the expensive studio equipment in the world doesn’t a good album make. It’s an incredibly satisfying soundscape due in large part to McClure’s mastery of hooks, of which there are frequently two per track. Enunciation needs work the next time this band decides to flex its muscle, as it were.
