Goodbye Terrible Youth

The follow-up to last year’s debut reveals an artist shaken by the world around him, and while heavy distortion remains, McClure turns away from tape recorders and to much brighter arrangements. The subject matter doesn’t follow suit, and one has the impression that these lyrics are deeply personal. “Terrible” as it may be, he still declares, “Where goes youth, I go,” on “Hello, Dear.” On the lead track, he sings to a lost soul, “I still can’t believe you died,” while his son is “stoned by policemen.” It’s all quite cryptic, so it would have helped if the melodies provided more direction (think “Cheapshot” or “This Ain’t”).
